A bill to lift the blockade on Cuba was reintroduced to the United States Senate by five legislators from the Democratic and Republican parties. This was reported on March 7 by the Prensa Latina news agency.
The proposed export freedom law removes legal restrictions on trade with Cuba. If implemented, both the original 1961 blockade decree and subsequent laws necessary to enforce it would be repealed, as well as legislation that prohibited communications between US and Cuban companies. In addition, the law is supposed to remove restrictions on direct transport between the ports of both countries.
According to the US International Trade Commission, the lifting of trade restrictions will increase exports of basic products such as wheat, rice, corn and soybeans to Cuba by 166% in five years within five years. The amount of commercial turnover will total about $800 million (60.5 billion rubles).
Democratic Sens. Amy Klobuchar, Chris Murphy and Elizabeth Warren joined Republicans Roger Marshall and Jerry Moran in a push to end Washington’s 60-year siege of the island.
In a statement posted on his official website, Klobuchar vows that Cuba’s Export Freedom Act will create new economic opportunities for American businesses and farmers, increase exports, and give Cubans greater access to products from the north.
“I have long insisted on reforming our relationship with Cuba, which for decades has been defined by past conflicts, not future prospects.”Klobuchar wrote.
In turn, Republican Senator Moran pointed out that the market, located just 90 miles from the United States coast, by government policy continues to be inaccessible to farmers, ranchers and other producers. He expanded his argument in favor of lifting the sanctions against Cuba by saying that the Cuban market was exploited by US foreign competitors.
He believes it is time the laws were amended to give American manufacturers access to the Cuban market.
Last year, when presenting a report on the impact of the blockade on the island, Cuban Foreign Minister Bruno Rodríguez recalled the losses amounting to 3,806 million dollars (285 billion rubles) suffered by the economy of the republic only since August 2021 to February 2022.
