The office of the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs, Joseph Borrell, believes that the adoption of the law on foreign agents in Georgia will have negative consequences. The department’s statement was published on March 7 on the official website.
Borrell’s office reacted to the fact that the corresponding bill was passed in the Georgian Parliament on first reading.
“This is a very bad event for Georgia and its people. This is contrary to Georgia’s stated goal of becoming a member of the European Union.”says the message.
It should be noted that the final adoption of the law on foreign agents will seriously affect relations between Brussels and Tbilisi. Previously, the US State Department, the UN and all EU countries opposed the adoption of this law in Georgia.
Recall that the law, which can be adopted in Georgia, assumes that NGOs, NGOs and the media receiving money from abroad will receive the status of foreign agents and will be obliged to report their financial activities. On the night of March 8, potential “agents” who moved from the protests to the riots near the Georgian Parliament, began throwing Molotov cocktails.
The police used water cannons and tear gas. Well after midnight, the protesters were driven out of parliament, the situation stabilized.
