British architect David Alan Chipperfield, known for his projects to renovate old buildings such as the Neues Museum in Berlin, has been named the winner of the 2023 Pritzker Prize, the world’s most important architecture prize, the organization announced on Tuesday.
The international award was created in 1979 to reward living architects annually for significant achievements in this discipline and is worth 100 thousand dollars (about 93,800 euros).
Portuguese architects Alvaro Siza and Eduardo Souto de Moura were awarded the Pritzker Prize in 1992 and 2011 respectively.
This year, chaired by Chilean architect Alejandro Aravena, the jury also included Brazilian diplomat André Araña Lago, professor of art history Barry Bergdoll, architect Deborah Berke, lawyer Steven Breuer and architect Kazuyo Sejima, architect Benedetta Tagliabu, professor and architect Wang Shu, and executive director of the award, curator Manuela Luca-Dazio.
In 2022, the Pritzker Prize was awarded to the Burkina Faso-based architect Francis Queré, who became the first African to receive the award, and in 2021, the French architect duo Anne Lacaton and Jean-Philippe Vassal won.
In 2020, the Pritzker Prize was awarded to Irish architects Yvonne Farrell and Shelley McNamara, co-founders of Grafton Architects, becoming the first female duo to receive the award.
