The European Commission received an email in Russian threatening an attack on the Brussels metro this Wednesday.
According to the newspaper Le Soir, the threat was not credible given the level of precision with which it was formulated, but the authorities took it “very seriously”. The Brussels prosecutor’s office launched an investigation, the Crisis Center is monitoring the situation, and the federal police conducted a control round in the metro at night. The patrols are getting stronger.
This is stated in the message of the security service of the European Commission. Le Soir had access, the man recently contacted the European institution twice via email. The first contact was from February 16, but did not contain anything alarming, the second, sent on March 3, contained a threatening message. “While the EU continues its aggressive policy, I would like to warn against the start of massive terrorist attacks on EU territory,” the man wrote in Russian. The man also referred to the “liquidation” of the “LGBT and other minorities” community and attacks on heads of state and government. The e-mail ended with a specific threat: “On March 8, the metro in Brussels will be blown up between Isère and Rogier.”
The threat prompted the police to carry out all the necessary checks by carrying out checks at all metro stations. “We took it [a ameaça] very seriously, we did a survey with police dogs capable of detecting explosives, which turned out to be negative, but we remain vigilant and all police services are on alert. The Brussels Public Prosecutor’s Office has launched an investigation to identify the culprit(s) behind this bomb threat,” a federal police source said.
