With 3.6 million children living in poverty in the UK, the Dunelm homewares store’s Christmas call showed how the crisis is already affecting many families.
Dunelm’s appeal stems from the Christmas tree markings in stores. People can take the tags home and return them along with their orders until December 11th.
according to Liverpool EchoHats, scarves and gloves were the most requested by children and adults, as well as chocolates for children and toiletries for adults.
On the holiday tags, a 10-year-old boy simply asked for “hat and cookies, please,” while another 12-year-old frantically asked for “a teddy bear to hold in case Santa doesn’t come to me.”
Adults also asked for similar items, such as clean socks and toiletries.
Kelly Nichols, an employee at Dunelm’s St Helens, Liverpool branch, shared requests on Facebook to show families struggling financially this year.
