The French Senate approved yesterday to raise the minimum retirement age from 62 to 64 years. Article 7 of the pension reform, which postpones the retirement age, went ahead with 201 votes in favor and 115 votes against. This is the key article of the pension reform project.
The votes against were mainly from the socialist, communist and environmental groups, according to the scrutiny of the Upper House.
Speaking to BFMTV, French Labor Minister Olivier Dussopt stressed the “very large” majority and criticized the behavior of the left.
However, legislators have to examine and approve, before the end of the week, the entire bill, which includes a revaluation of pensions to 85 percent of the minimum interprofessional salary, around 1,200 euros net.
This bill has met with response of society in the streets. Last Tuesday was the sixth major mobilization in just a month and a half against the pension reform. More than 3.5 million people gathered in the demonstrations on Tuesday, according to the unions (1.28 million people, according to government data). The strike on Tuesday was also widely followed in public transport and in schools in Ipar Euskal Herria.
The main unions have called for new demonstrations for Saturdayindicating that “the Government must withdraw its project now”.
