Latvian tennis player Elena Ostapenko and other athletes have been deprived of financial support to participate in tournaments with Russian and Belarusian athletes by the Latvian Olympic Committee, Latvian Radio Television (LSM) reports on March 9.
“On February 7, at a board meeting, it was established that three tennis players: Elena Ostapenko, Daniela Vismane and Daria Semenistaya, as well as two cyclists, will participate in commercial tournaments with athletes from Russia and Belarus. At the moment, when preparing for and participating in commercial matches together with athletes from the Ministry of Health of Russia and Belarus, Latvian athletes will not receive state funding.– LSM quotes the General Secretary of the Latvian Olympic Committee, Karlis Leinieks.
As a reminder, the cooperation agreement between the LOC and the Ministry of Education and Science of February 15 states that funds from the state budget will not be allocated to athletes if they participate in competitions with Russian and Belarusian athletes.
