Authorities in Transnistria, a pro-Russian region contested by the Moldovan government, have asked the UN to investigate a plot to attack high-ranking officials they disarmed on Thursday and blamed on neighboring Ukraine.
“I have already instructed the Minister of Foreign Affairs to prepare statements for all members of the UN Security Council (…) We will appeal to them to study this situation and guarantee our security,” the president of the self-proclaimed republic, Vadim Krasnoselsky, said on local television.
The announcement comes hours after separatist authorities in Transnistria announced that a terrorist attack, which they said was organized by the Ukrainian security services (SBU), had been thwarted.
The SBU responded to this accusation, calling the allegations a “provocation orchestrated by the Kremlin” and following statements from Moscow in late February that Kyiv was “preparing” to attack Transnistria.
For his part, Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean said he had “no confirmation” of the veracity of these allegations.
Ever since Russia launched a military offensive into Ukraine, there have been rumors of a new front opening in Transnistria towards the main port city in southern Ukraine, Odessa.
Moscow is also accused of trying to destabilize Moldova, which was once in its zone of influence and is now led by pro-European authorities.
