The Ethiopian government and Tigray rebels have agreed to a “cessation of hostilities” in a two-year-long northern region of Ethiopia at peace talks in Pretoria, an African Union (AU) mediator said on Wednesday.
“The two sides of the Ethiopian conflict have officially agreed to a cessation of hostilities,” Olusegun Obasanjo, AU High Representative for the Horn of Africa, said at a press conference in Pretoria, South Africa, where peace talks have been taking place since October 25.
The former Nigerian president said that the government of Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed and the Tigray authorities also reached an agreement on “an orderly, smooth and coordinated disarmament”, along with the “restoration of law and order”, “restoration of services”. and “unhindered access to humanitarian supplies.”
