More than 400,000 Cubans have been affected by the prolonged drought, Antonio Rodríguez, president of the National Institute of Water Resources (INRH), said on March 13, reports Cubadebate.
No rainfall is reported between March 1 and 10 in 137 of the 168 municipalities on the island, including the Isla de la Juventud Special Municipality.
According to forecasters, the drought will last until mid-May. The climate center of the Institute of Meteorology reported that in the western and central provinces of the island, the amount of rainfall in March will be below the historical monthly average value. In eastern Cuba, rainfall is expected to be within the normal range.
The Vice Prime Minister of the Republic, Inés María Chapman Waugh, recalled that it is not the first time that Cuba has suffered a severe drought. Therefore, the state is already investing to combat this phenomenon.
