Russian grandmaster Aleksey Sarana became the European Chess Champion in Vrnjacka Banja (Serbia) on March 13, the tournament results are published on the specialized chess results server chess-results.com.

In the eleventh final, tournament leaders Alexei Sarana (Russia, FIDE rating 2668) and Kirill Shevchenko (Romania, 2688) played a quick draw against each other, allowing Daniel Darda (Belgium, 2610), who defeated Anton Korobov (Ukraine), who was in the lead at mid-tournament, 2658) to catch up with them on points. As a result, Sarana, Shevchenko and Darda each have 8.5 points out of 11. According to additional indicators, Alexei Sarana became the European Chess Champion in 2023, Kirill Shevchenko is second, Daniel Darda is third.

The 23 best chess players in the European Championship received a ticket to the FIDE World Cup, including Russian grandmasters Andrey Esipenko (2680) and David Paravyan (2584).

Recall that the European Chess Championship was held in the Serbian resort of Vrnjacka-Banya from March 3 to 13 according to the Swiss system in 11 rounds. 484 chess players participated in the tournament. The championship prize fund is 100,000 euros, of which 20,000 for the winner.
