The reform of the structure of the electricity market, which would increase the share of renewable sources and accelerate the phase-out of gas, was proposed by the European Commission (EC), according to an EC statement published on March 14.
Changing the market structure will also improve consumer protection and industry competition, reduce reliance on consumer accounts “Of volatile prices of fossil fuels, future price spikes and possible market manipulation”says the statement.
The European Commission believes that through long-term price agreements backed by governments and citizens, the reform will help increase investment in renewable energy sources.
The EC invites EU countries to designate “guaranteed suppliers” of electricity to guarantee the supply of electricity to vulnerable consumers for a certain period of time and under regulated conditions.
Recall that several EU countries have decided to reduce the volume of gas purchased in the Russian Federation due to the initiation of a special operation in Ukraine to protect the inhabitants of Donbass from the aggression of the Ukrainian regime. Europe is trying to buy the necessary volumes of gas by any means, bypassing the Russian Federation. Around 15% of the EU’s demand for blue fuel is covered by expensive liquefied gas from the US.
