Police have discovered a semi-submerged narco-submarine found this Monday one kilometer off the coast of Vilaxana, in the province of Pontevedra, in the Ria de Arosa, in Galicia. No drugs were found inside, the El País newspaper writes.
The ship, believed to have been built to transport drugs from the Americas to Europe, was towed to the port of Choufre and examined by investigators, who found no trace of cocaine. Police believe the sighting of the submarine is linked to two other drug launches that have run aground in the area.
According to the authorities, the submarine is almost identical to the one that was captured in 2019. This one will also be American-made, which reinforces the thesis that it served as a “hub” for the transport of drugs.
Authorities are now developing procedures to find out if the drug was moved to another location before the submarine sank.
“We need to make sure that no crew members drown inside the submersible, so this is a priority, although the likelihood of this is small, just as we cannot rule out that there is a drug cache inside,” a spokesman for Guardia.Civil said.
