At least four dogs have been poisoned and three have died during a cross-country race in France this weekend. The organizers of the French Canicross 30 championship, where owners compete with their pets for the right to participate in the Canicross World Championship, said the dogs died after eating poisoned meatballs.
Samples from several suspected meatballs are currently being examined to determine the type of poison, and an animal cruelty investigation has been launched. The only dog that survived the incident continues to recover from treatment. guardian.
The poisoning is believed to have occurred on Sunday morning in Vauvert, southern France, on the second and final day of the competition, and as a result, the competition was cancelled. Teams made up of event attendees and volunteers searched the event grounds for more poisoned meatballs.
The four poisoned dogs will compete in the final race, with the winners qualifying for the Canicross World Championship in Germany in October. They ended up dying 15 minutes after eating the meat. The veterinarian team present at the event was unable to save them.
The Federation of Dog Sports and Recreation, which is responsible for organizing the event, described the attack on Facebook as a “criminal act”, saying that “someone put the poisoned meatballs back in place.”
Immediately after the incident, the mayor of the city forbade anyone to go into the forest while investigators figure out what happened. The criminal act of cruelty to animals carries a maximum penalty of up to two years in prison and a fine of up to €30,000.
