Russian and Chinese leaders will sign a declaration marking a new era in relations between the two countries during the Chinese President’s visit to Russia next week, the Kremlin said this Friday.
Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese leader Xi Jinping intend to sign a “joint declaration (…) to deepen partnership and strategic relations and usher in a new era,” Kremlin diplomatic adviser Yuri Ushakov said, quoted by Russian news agencies.
According to Ushakov, Putin and Xi will also sign another document on Russian-Chinese economic cooperation until 2030, as well as a dozen more agreements that are in preparation.
On Monday, the two leaders will also publish an editorial to be published in Russian and Chinese newspapers, which will be “an important signal before the actual discussions,” Ushakov said.
The Kremlin’s diplomatic adviser stressed that the meeting will discuss the conflict in Ukraine, adding that Russia “really appreciates the Chinese leadership’s complete restraint and balanced position on this issue.”
According to Ushakov, Beijing “understands the true causes of this crisis,” and Moscow positively welcomes the initiative put forward by China to resolve the conflict in Ukraine on the basis of a document published on February 24.
According to Ushakov, Putin and Xi will also discuss cooperation in the “military-technical” and energy sectors.
Regarding the schedule for Xi’s visit, which will take place from March 20 to 22, Ushakov said the two presidents will have their first one-on-one meeting on Monday before dinner.
A Kremlin spokesman has previously spoken of a “lunch”.
Xi’s visit coincided with Russia shifting its economy en masse to China since the start of the conflict in Ukraine, which prompted a series of Western sanctions.
Many analysts believe Moscow is now in danger of becoming dependent on Beijing, but Ushakov disputes that observation.
“There is no leader or follower in Russian-Chinese relations. Both sides equally trust each other,” the Russian representative said.
