Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has decided to begin the process of ratifying Finland’s NATO membership, Reuters reports.
At a meeting with the Turkish president and his Finnish counterpart, Erdogan confirmed the decision, which will be put to a vote in parliament.
The Turkish leader believes that Finland will play an “active role in NATO” and that he supports the organization’s “open door” policy. Erdogan has expressed a desire to make a decision before the country’s presidential elections in May.
Finland’s accession to NATO remains dependent on the decision of Hungary, which will vote in favor of this position on 27 March.
The President of Finland expressed his satisfaction with the decision and recalled the importance of this decision for the Scandinavian country. However, he recalled that Finland’s accession would not be complete if Sweden did not take the same step.
Regarding the accession of Sweden, Erdogan postponed the decision and added that the Swedes “opened their arms to terrorism.”
