The US Department of Justice and the FBI have launched an investigation into why ByteDance, the company that owns the TikTok app, was allegedly spying on American journalists.
According to a Justice Department source cited by Forbes, the Criminal Division’s Fraud Unit is working with the Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia to ask a Chinese company for information about its employees’ attempts to access geolocation from American journalists, as well as other sensitive data. from users of the TikTok app.
The company confirmed after an internal investigation that the app was being used by some of its employees to obtain information about US users.
In a statement cited by Efe, a ByteDance spokeswoman said the company “strongly condemns the actions of the individuals involved” in the dispute and ensures that they no longer work for the company.
The FBI is also investigating the same topic, according to sources cited by Forbes, although they have not confirmed whether the investigations are joint or respond to different causes.
A few days ago, the US Foreign Investment Committee demanded that ByteDance sell its stake in TikTok in order to continue operating in the US, where it has over 100 million users.
