Calls for sanctions against the “oligarchs” of Moldova and Georgia came from several EU foreign ministers who attended a meeting on March 20 in Brussels. This is how the Political newspaper reports it.
“These two countries are facing destabilization attempts that require our utmost vigilance and may justify us beginning to consider prosecuting those responsible.”– said the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of France, Catherine Colonna was appointed.
According to journalists, the Estonian and Romanian foreign ministers also made similar statements. They called for sanctions against “pro-Russian oligarchs”.
Recall that in Moldova, due to the fact that tariffs for public services were increased several times, mass protests have continued since the fall of 2022. The protesters do not riot, but the Moldovan authorities accuse them of “destabilization”. The leader of the Shor party, which organizes the actions, Ilan Shor is called “Russian oligarch”though he fled to Israel, and was barred from entering Russia.
In Georgia, in early March, opponents of the introduction of the law on foreign agents began to protest. Despite the fact that this is an analogue of American law, it was called “Russian”and the Georgian government “pro-Russian”. Protesters rioted and threw Molotov cocktails at police, but the West called the protests “peaceful” and condemned the use of water cannons and tear gas to disperse hooligans.
