The accident of the Russian Ocean Way inflatable sailing trimaran in the Pacific Ocean will not stop the expedition of the Tomsk branch of the Russian Geographical Society “On the path of Russian circumnavigators around the world,” the expedition’s coastal headquarters announced on March 21st. , reports the press service of the Tomsk Scientific Center (TSC) of the Siberian Branch of the Russian Academy of Sciences.
It is reported that the expedition on the new ship should resume in April from Easter Island.
The Russian Ocean Way trimaran began its journey through the Pacific Ocean on February 28, leaving Concepción Bay and heading to Easter Island. Evgeny Kovalevsky, adviser to the director of the TSC SB RAS, became the head of the expedition, and Stanislav Berezkin became the ship’s captain. They were joined by sailor Yegor Musileev from Brazil and his dog named Pasoka.
The travelers said that the Pacific Ocean almost immediately showed them its far from calm disposition. They had to go against a powerful headwind, experiencing severe shock waves. In two weeks, her voyage totaled 1,200 nautical miles (2,222.4 km).
The crash occurred on March 16, when the elements broke the steering mechanism and the ship lost control. In deteriorating weather conditions, it was decided to send an SOS signal.
Upon receiving it, the head of the expedition’s coastal headquarters, Yulia Kalyuzhnaya, contacted the Chilean sailors and military rescuers.
The cargo ship “Sunion”, which was sailing to Brazil under the Panamanian flag, turned out to be the closest vessel to the trimaran. Her crew managed to find a drifting trimaran in a storm and took the crew of Siberians on board.
The trimaran, towed away, was later torn from the bulk carrier. At the same time, the storm created too high a risk for people to save the Russian Ocean Road. Loss of all crew equipment and property.
By March 28, Sunion will deliver travelers to the Chilean port of Puerto Arenas, but the world tour of Siberian sailors will not end. Julia Kalyuzhnaya found a way to save the expedition.
On Easter Island, Russian traveler Dmitry Trubitsyn maintains his inflatable sailing catamaran of the same type as the Russian Ocean Way. He agreed to provide it for the continuation of the expedition.
On March 31, Evgeny Kovalevsky and Stanislav Berezkin will fly to Easter Island and together with Yulia Kalyuzhnaya they will inspect the catamaran, buy equipment, and then continue the expedition.
In April 2023, the participants intend to continue the expedition from Easter Island and across the Pacific Ocean to Indonesia.
