A two-year overhaul completed the Museum of Modern Art in Hiroshima, Japan, on March 21, Kyodo News reports.
The institution opened in 1989 and became Japan’s first public museum of contemporary art. It mainly presents works dedicated to the themes of atomic bombing and peace.
Hiroshima is one of only two cities in the world to be atomic bombed. In August 1945, American troops dropped such a bomb on it and another Japanese city, Nagasaki.
The museum building was designed by the architect Kisho Kurokawa. During the reconstruction, work was carried out to repair the interior and exterior. The inauguration took place on March 19.
After the closure in December 2020, repairmen replaced the aluminum roof and also arranged for the exhibits to be illuminated with LED light sources.
In addition, the building now houses a cafeteria and a multifunctional space. Barrier-free toilets also appeared, as well as rooms for medical personnel.
“Today is a new beginning. We would like to continue playing our role in spreading messages of peace.”.— said the director of the Teraguchi Junji Museum at the celebration event.
Remember that the architect Kurokawa is known for other works. In particular, he designed the Nakagin Capsule Tower in the Ginza district of Tokyo. Built in the early 1970s, this building is an example of the so-called “Japanese metabolism.”
Demolition of the Nakagin Building began in April 2022 following a 2007 decision by local residents who did not appreciate the overly cramped interiors and use of asbestos.
