On Tuesday, the European Union’s (EU) High Representative for Foreign Affairs defended that the 27 participants should be doing more than peace among member states and that one can “do more and better” for the world.
“The EU must do more than just guarantee peace among Europeans, it must be an actor in the world that can contribute to its improvement,” Josep Borrell said at the closing of the first Schumanov Forum on Defense and Security, which took place in the building of the European Parliament in Brussels.
According to the head of European diplomacy, the member states of the community bloc must “take responsibility, which means that European defense must be stronger.”
Over the past 12 months, the EU has been focusing on the Russian Federation’s invasion of Ukraine, but Josep Borrell added that at the same time, the bloc is intervening on other fronts, namely in Africa, as part of the European Peace Mechanism. .
“We are working to start deliveries to African partners in the coming months, namely in Niger – ammunition for helicopters, and in Somalia – ammunition for training,” added the EU High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security.
Borrell also cited the example of Mozambique, where the EU is helping the military with training missions and equipment in the Cabo Delgado region, which has faced looting and massacres by forces loyal to the Islamic extremist group Al-Shabaab.
“We cannot be physically there,” but the EU supports the country and the armed forces, he stressed.
The Shumanov Forum on Defense and Security for the first time this year held an event that the head of European diplomacy wants to make regular every two years.
However, given the current circumstances of the world, which, in the words of the high representative, “is not the world of 1945 or the end of the last century”, Borrell proposed another event at the end of the year: “Before the end of my mandate.”
