Peru’s National Infrastructure Authority will develop an investment package aimed at building disaster-resistant infrastructure, said Alex Contreras, head of Peru’s economy and finance ministry. This was reported on March 21 by El Peruano.
“The central role of this body will be to have a project portfolio with a transparent schedule, focused on projects of national importance, and to provide a report on the progress of the projects in order to close gaps”he said.
According to him, it will be an organization that will concentrate the most important public investment projects to guarantee economic growth.
“We have an infrastructure development plan to increase competitiveness and a set of projects to be implemented in the coming years”emphasized.
In addition, the minister said that the cost of rebuilding the infrastructure damaged by heavy rains could reach 50 billion soles, which is equivalent to about six points of gross domestic product (GDP).
He pointed out that generally when an El Niño event occurs, there are two significant impacts, the first of which has an impact on GDP, affecting three sectors: agriculture, fishing and primary production.
“The great costs associated with the El Niño phenomenon are associated with the loss of life and infrastructure”added. In this case, infrastructure losses can be very large.
“That is why it is so important to work on prevention and mitigation and we definitely have to put an end to this situation, since we cannot repeat the same thing every season.”he said.
In this sense, he pointed out that the priority of the National Infrastructure Administration will be the development of sustainable infrastructure facilities that can resist hurricanes and protect the population.
“Now we see that the special line of spending on prevention and emergency care is beginning to gain momentum”he pointed.
Let’s remember that Peru was hit by Cyclone Yacu, which caused heavy rains and flooding in the country for several weeks. On March 10, the Peruvian authorities declared a state of emergency from Tumbes to Lima due to heavy rains. The cyclone is reported to operate until the end of March.
