The TikTok app has been banned from being installed on the work phones of government officials in the Netherlands, according to the Nl Times on March 21.
Soon, the work phones of all government officials will be set to allow only pre-approved apps to be installed, Secretary of State Alexandra van Haffelen said in a letter to Parliament. The list of pre-approved applications does not include “suspicious spyware applications”. TikTok, a Chinese app, also falls into this category.
There are around 140 thousand government officials and civil servants in the Netherlands. However, it is not known how many of them use state-provided phones.
Van Haffelen called the move to only allow pre-approved apps on government phones a structural decision for government employees.
Remember that earlier the intelligence service AIVD told the Dutch government that the applications “ruled by countries with an offensive cyber program directed at national interests”they are at higher risk of using them for espionage.
