Gerber Good Start SootheProTM Powdered Infant Formula recalled a product due to possible contamination with potentially harmful bacteria, the Perrigo Co. reported March 21.
Control officials explained that the enterobacterium Cronobacter sakazakii may have been present between January 2 and 18 at Gateway’s manufacturing facility in Eau Claire, Wisc. This bacterium is the cause of some wound infections, urinary tract infections, and osteomyelitis in adults.
No product distributed has tested positive for bacteria. No one reported any side effects, the company added in a news release.
No other products manufactured by the company are affected by the recall at this plant or other Perrigo facilities.
The recall is voluntary after consultation with the US Food and Drug Administration.
The C. sakazakii bacterium is commonly found in the environment. They can cause severe symptoms in premature babies, babies younger than 2 months, or babies with weakened immune systems.
