The Ukrainian state has decided to take control of several companies strategically important to aiding the war effort, including hydrocarbon producer Ukrnafta and aircraft manufacturer Motor Sich, the government announced on Monday.
“A decision has been made to expropriate the assets of strategically important companies with their transfer to state ownership,” Secretary of the Security Council of Ukraine Oleksiy Danilov said at a press conference.
“After the lifting of martial law, these assets can be returned to their owners or their value reimbursed,” he said.
In addition to Motor Sich and Ukrnafta, Zaporizhtransformator, a company specializing in the production of reactors, the truck manufacturer AvtoKraz, and the oil refinery Ukrtatnafta, also come under state control.
“The assets of these five companies will be administered by the Ministry of Defense to respond to the urgent needs of the armed forces. That is, for the supply of fuels and lubricants, the repair of military equipment and weapons, ”said the Minister of Defense of Ukraine Oleksiy Reznikov.
Prime Minister Denys Chmyhal emphasized that the target enterprises produce “primary products for the needs of the defense and the armed forces, as well as for the energy sector.”
“These companies must work 24 hours a day in order to protect the state,” the head of government defended.
Since the beginning of the Russian invasion on February 24, Ukraine has been heavily dependent on Western arms supplies and financial support from the United States and the European Union.
