The Venice Commission sent the draft law “On De-oligarization” to the Georgian Parliament for review, despite the fact that a similar law was passed for Ukraine, Anri Okhanashvili, chairman of the legal committee, said at a parliamentary meeting on 22 January. March.
“If the Venice Commission saw problems in terms of legal protection in the draft law sent by Georgia, which is similar to Ukrainian law, then based on what legal logic did the European Commission tell Ukraine: “Your law is good and start implementing it? he?” Okhanashvili said.
The bill will soon be finalized taking into account the recommendations of the Venice Commission. According to the conclusion, the bill gives the Georgian government too much influence in the process and creates a high risk of human rights violations.
Passage of the de-oligarization law is one of 12 requirements prescribed by the European Commission for Georgia to meet in order to obtain EU candidate status. The Georgian authorities decided to completely copy the Ukrainian version of the law on decoupling, because it was approved by the Venice Commission.
Earlier, the European Parliament adopted a resolution in which Bidzina Ivanishvili, the founder of the ruling Georgian Dream party, was named an oligarch and demanded sanctions against her.
