The Twenty-seven and the European Parliament close an agreement to decarbonise maritime transport

The member countries of the European Union and the European Parliament have reached a provisional agreement on Thursday to decarbonise the maritime sector. To do this, they will use more renewable and low carbon fuelswith limited exceptions for the outermost regions and small islands.

At the time when said agreement enters into force, with the ratification of the Council and the European Parliament, emissions from ships will be progressively reduced by 2% until 2025. Along the same lines, emissions from ships will drop by 6%. from 2030, 14.5% from 2035 and 31% from 2040. By 2050, ships in the euro area will reduce their emissions by 80%.

All this with the aim of the European Union achieving climate neutrality, as the European Parliament reported in a statement on Thursday.

The agreement contemplates that emissions be reduced in those vessels of more than 5000 tons, which are the ones that make the most use of fuel. In addition to this, the objective of decarbonizing the maritime sector also contemplates the sustainability of the ports, as well as for 50% of the energy used in trips in which the port of departure or arrival is outside the EU or the regions outermost regions of the European community.

This agreement is part of the agreement reached last December between the Council and the European Parliament to reduce CO2 emissions and achieve climate neutrality by 2050.
