In France, after reducing gas and electricity consumption, they decided to take similar measures with regard to water, writes the French daily Sud Ouest on March 23.
The French government in the energy crisis has found a way to reduce energy costs. For this, an energy sobriety plan or economic consumption of gas and electricity was developed. The plan has paid off, reducing energy consumption by 10% or more in various regions of the country.
With the country facing the threat of another drought in 2022, the executive branch decided to take similar measures regarding water use. According to the French Civil Service Minister, Stanislas Guerini, on March 23, the government has proposed a 10% reduction in water consumption in the coming months. To implement this task, an economic attitude plan towards water will be presented, he said.
Initially, works to improve water management started in September 2022. And the plan itself was supposed to be presented by the government in January 2023, but this was postponed several times. On March 22, French President Emmanuel Macron said the plan would be presented in the coming weeks.
“We believe that we can achieve a consumption reduction of -10% in one year”Guerini commented.
According to the minister, in 2019, the consumption of water in the state civil service reached 22 million m3. Therefore, according to the plan, the savings should have amounted to more than 2 million m3. From his point of view, this was equivalent to the daily water savings in the volume of three Olympic-sized swimming pools.
Of the 190,000 buildings in the public service balance sheet, 2,000 have already been identified as a priority source of savings due to excessive water consumption, the minister said.
