The Bolivian government has said that it will always defend its rights of sovereign access to the sea, reports the EFE news agency on March 23.
The statement was made by the head of the Presidential Cabinet, María Nela Prada, on the eve of Maritime Day, which is celebrated in Bolivia. According to her, Bolivia will insist on a dialogue with Chile aimed at healing the country’s historical “wound”.
Bolivia celebrates Maritime Day every March 23. On this day, the country remembers the Second War of the Pacific (187901883), in which Bolivia was defeated by Chile and lost some 400 km of coastline and almost 120 thousand square kilometers of territory.
On the eve of the Day of the Sea, the remains of the hero Eduardo Abaroa were solemnly transferred from the Basilica of San Francisco in downtown La Paz to the square that bears his name.
