Church leaders in Gujarat, the home state of Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, have demanded strict action in response to negative comments circulating on social media offending the Pope and Catholic nuns. This was reported on March 22 by UCA News.
On March 21, Archbishop Thomas Ignatius Makwan of Gandhinagar wrote to Gujarat Prime Minister Bhupendra Patel to take “immediate and severe” action against the as-yet-unnamed speaker and the organizers of an event where defamatory statements were made. against the leader of the Catholic Church. . .
A video of the event has been circulating on social media for the past few days and contains provocative statements against local Christians and the Catholic pilgrimage center of Unteshwari Mata Mandir in Kadi village.
“We do not know the name of the speaker. But judging from the podium and the background of the stage, it is clear that he was speaking at the Vishwa Hindu Parishad event. [Всемирный индуистский совет] in Kadi, Mehsana district, in northwestern Gujarat,” said Fr. Telesforo Fernandez.
The speech, in the local Gujarati language, contains openly aggressive references to the Pope and the nuns and urges the crowd not to tolerate Christian priests and nuns in their midst.
The speaker went on to call for the expulsion of the “dagalawala” (robed priests) from the area.
McWan’s letter, released to local media, says the video contains “disgusting, shameful and offensive statements against the Pope.”
The speaker, in the words of the prelate, “offended His Holiness with vexatious, rude and rude words. He touched the feelings of 1.4 billion Catholics around the world.”
He went on to state that the speaker also “cast a shadow over the integrity of the Catholic nuns and priests who performed the service of the yeomanry to humanity, regardless of their caste, creed, or religion.”
Makwan said the event is likely to have the support of local political leaders.
“This is being done systematically, consciously and deliberately, with the tacit support of local political bosses and their ideologues.”says the letter.
So far, the police have not taken any action against the defendant.
Let us remember that the VHP is considered an organization of Hindu radicals who openly persecute and threaten to expel Christians from the country, accusing them of converting people to their faith by force, fraud and deceit.
