Pakistan’s Election Commission (CEC) should reverse the recent decision to postpone the elections in Punjab province from April 30 to October 8 so as not to violate Pakistan’s constitution and election law, suggested the Supreme Court lawyer and president of the Association for Judicial Activism Azhar Siddiqi in a letter to the CEC, March 23, The Express Tribune reported.
In his letter, he stressed that according to the Pakistani constitution, the CEC must ensure fair and open elections, and the Supreme Court had previously given direct instructions to comply with constitutional norms.
Thus, the postponement of the elections until October 8 is a violation of the constitution and electoral law, as well as a direct lack of respect for the Supreme Court.
Remember, on March 22, Pakistan’s Central Election Commission issued a notice to postpone the parliamentary elections in Punjab from the previously scheduled date of April 30 to October 8, effectively violating the Supreme Court’s decision.

It should be noted that the Supreme Court decision established that the elections must be held within the 90-day time frame established by the constitution after the dissolution of the previous parliament (which took place in Punjab on January 14). At the same time, the court allowed a deviation from the schedule established for “minimum possible time”based on practical considerations of the feasibility of the electoral process.
