TikTok in the crosshairs of Western institutions and governments

The success of this social network has been accompanied by misgivings from Western countries who fear that ByteDance could share user data with the Chinese government.

TikTok is in the crosshairs of governments and international institutions, given the suspicion that the Chinese authorities could violate the Right to privacy through the data collected in this application.

To try to clear up these doubts, the executive director of TikTok, Shou Zi Chew, appears this Thursday, for the first time, before a committee of the US Congress.

In these moments of geopolitical struggle, some governments and institutions westerners they have banned the app on their official phones for national security reasons.

TikTok is an application that allows you to make short videos with mobile devices with millions of views. The social network has become one of the favorites of many young people who use it, in addition to entertainment, as a tool to search for information on everyday matters or to keep up to date with the latest news.

What is the problem?

This success has been accompanied by misgivings from Western countries who fear that ByteDance could share the data of users of the social network with the Chinese government. Something that is in contradiction with safety regulations, especially in Europe. Furthermore, like other platforms, TikTok has also been accused of offering content that may harm to youth and adolescents.

The United States was the first country to impose restrictions on the Chinese network was the United States in 2020, where it is estimated that two thirds of its adolescents use it. In the midst of the tariff war with China, Donald Trump prohibited downloads of the application until his subsidiary in the United States was sold to a national company.

On February 23 of this year, the European Commission and the Council of the EU prohibited their employees from installing or using the application on official devices to further strengthen cybersecurity measures.
