At least 15 Burkina Faso auxiliaries have been killed in an attack in the north of the country, Reuters reported on March 23.
According to police sources, the attack took place in the central part of the northern region of the West African country, a focus of jihadist activity associated with Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State), and was carried out by unknown armed men.
A security source also said troops guard water pipes, which are often destroyed by groups blocking access to various parts of northern and eastern Burkina Faso.
The rebels mined roads, besieged towns, destroyed waterworks and undermined efforts to bring food and supplies to trapped civilians.
A government spokesman did not respond to a request for comment on the attack.
Burkina Faso is one of several West African countries battling violent Islamist groups that have taken root in neighboring Mali and spread across the region over the past decade.
Frustration over the authorities’ failure to restore security has fueled two military coups in Burkina Faso and two in Mali since 2020.
