On March 21, Paraguayan Foreign Minister Julio César Arriola and US Ambassador Mark Osfield signed a memorandum of understanding on the development of a master plan to guarantee navigation on the Paraguay River, reports IP.
The plan reportedly includes an analysis of economically viable and environmentally and socially sustainable alternatives between the confluence of the Apa and Pilcomayo rivers.
The research will be supported by the US Corps of Engineers in projects to increase transportation capacity and efficiency along this route. The plan will take into account environmental conditions, coastal communities, including those that depend on changes in river flow.
The Paraguay River is one of the main components of the Paraguay-Paraná waterway and is Paraguay’s main foreign trade channel, through which around 80% of imports and exports are transported.
