Portugal will contribute 75,000 euros to support the collection of evidence of war crimes in Ukraine and allows the participation of experts from the judicial police and the Institute of Forensic Medicine in the forensic teams.
In response to questions from Lusa, the Portuguese Ministry of Justice said Justice Minister Catarina Sarmento e Castro had announced a voluntary contribution of 75,000 euros to support the collection of international forensic evidence in Ukraine, but that other forms of cooperation were being explored.
This week at a conference in London on ways to support International Criminal Court (ICC) investigations in Ukraine, Catarina Sarmento y Castro committed financial support to Portugal in investigating possible war crimes in Ukraine, and also recognized other forms of cooperation with international investigations .
“With regard to support for ICC investigations of war crimes committed in Ukraine, in particular the crime of aggression, Portugal has already provided additional support by providing a national expert from the judicial police on secondment and advance payment of the national contribution to the Court. , in accordance with the request of the prosecutor’s office, ”says the ministry’s responses to Luce.
The Portuguese Government has acknowledged that it is considering “sending experts from the SP and the National Institute of Forensic Medicine and Forensics to bring together teams of forensic experts in the field on a rotating basis”.
More than 40 countries gathered in London this week to discuss further support for an independent International Criminal Court (ICC) to investigate war crimes in Ukraine.
For the European Union as a whole, the announced financial support provided by Member States amounts to more than eight million euros.
