The president of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) said on Thursday that Russian or Belarusian athletes who publicly express support for the war with Ukraine will not be allowed to compete in the 2024 Olympics in Paris.
“Our principles clearly state that any active support for the war is prohibited, including the use of the symbol Z. [associado ao apoio à invasão russa]as well as showing support on social media, including,” said Thomas Bach in Essen, Germany.
In connection with the participation of Russians and Belarusians in the Paris 2024 Games, qualification for which has already begun, Thomas Bach once again referred to the political neutrality of the IOC and the intention not to exclude athletes solely on the basis of their nationality.
From March 28 to 30, the IOC Executive Commission will decide on sanctions against Russia and Belarus, the status of athletes from both countries and measures of solidarity with Ukraine.
Topics related to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022 will be discussed in Lausanne, Switzerland and following consultations by the IOC with its members, National Olympic Committees, International Federations and athletes with a view to setting the Olympic horizon.
