US Senator tells Secretary of State that F-16s should not be sold to Turkey

Turkey cannot receive F-16 military aircraft, Bob Menendez, head of the US Senate Foreign Relations Committee, told US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken on March 23 at a Senate meeting.

Menendez said that Turkey violates the airspace and territorial waters of other countries and purchases Russian military equipment in violation of US law.

In addition, according to the senator, in Turkey “there are more lawyers and journalists in prison than in any other country.”

He pointed out that Ankara “not only did not join the EU sanctions against Russia, but also exported goods worth about 800 million dollars to Russia”, Mendes also accused Turkey of carrying out air strikes on the territory of Iraq and Siri, “even against American partners like FDS.

Mendez accused Turkey of halting NATO expansion, occupying an EU country, banning religious freedoms, turning churches into mosques, in violation of UNESCO commitments. He also claimed that in Turkey “American personnel are being arrested and imprisoned.”

Addressing his remarks to Anthony Blinken, the Secretary of State responded that he would characterize Turkey as a “difficult ally.”
