40,438 children and adolescents crossed the borders of Panama in 2022, reports La Estrella De Panamá on March 23.
The publication said that migration is increasing, and the number of people crossing the Darién is increasing every year. In the last five years alone, the figures have changed drastically: if in 2018 only 9,000 migrants dared to cross the border, in 2022 their number rose to 248,284, almost tripling.
In 2022, it is reported that 40,438 children migrated and crossed the borders of Panama, of which 1,119 crossed the border unaccompanied or separated from their families.
The publication said that unaccompanied children are exposed to numerous dangers, such as child labor, begging, sexual abuse, child trafficking.
It is observed that the majority of children who cross the borders are not even of school age, 50% of migrant children are between zero and five years old, and they are even more at risk of migrating.
