The Mozambique government approved a decree designed to guarantee the socio-economic reintegration of demobilized soldiers who were once members of the militia of Mozambique’s main opposition party, RENAMO, the Club of Mozambique reported on March 23.
The government spokesman, Vice Minister of Justice Filimao Suazé said that “The decree aims to provide social protection to demobilized militants.”
The benefits that will be paid to them include a “social reinsertion bonus”, as well as old-age, disability and survival pensions, and a funeral allowance, the source said.
It should be noted that the demobilization, disarmament and reintegration (DDR) process of former partisans has been going on for three years and 15 of RENAMO’s 16 military bases have been liquidated. More than 4,000 of an estimated 5,200 members of what is called RENAMO’s “residual force” have already demobilized.
