New Starbucks CEO to work as in-store barista every month

New Starbucks CEO Laxman Narasimhan said he would be working as a barista at Starbucks stores once a month.

Narasimhan officially became the coffee chain’s CEO this Monday, but he’s been with the company for months: he became interim CEO in October and has since spent time getting to know the company, earning a barista certification, which takes 40 hours. in-store training.

“For the past six months at the company, I’ve been learning about the distinct culture that exists at Starbucks,” Narasimhan wrote in a letter to company employees released this Thursday, which CNN Business had access to.

“With you, I have experienced all aspects of the business to find out what it really means to wear a green apron. to do so, and the challenges and opportunities we face,” Narasimhan wrote.

“In order to keep us closer to the culture and our customers, as well as our challenges and opportunities, I intend to continue to work in stores half a day each month.”

In the letter, Narasimhan also discussed how he plans to continue the reorganization plan outlined by the former CEO. Starbucks has invested more than $1 billion in training upgrades, equipment upgrades, pay increases and other benefits for non-union employees, among other things, to help modernize the brand and make it more relevant.
