Among Israeli politicians, the question of the legality or illegality of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s direct involvement in the review of the country’s judicial system has been brewing since March 24, Reuters reports.
Attorney General Gali Baharav-Miara issued his warning, saying Netanyahu should stay away from his coalition’s efforts to reform the judicial system because such activity would be affected by conflicts of interest resulting from his trials.
In a message released by the ruling Likud party, an unnamed source close to Netanyahu, by contrast, denied that the prime minister violated any conflict-of-interest laws or agreements in his statement, saying it had no consequences for him.
The source said the prime minister has an obligation to try to reach a broad consensus at a time of national crisis that has repercussions both domestically and internationally.
Remember, Netanyahu’s coalition is seeking changes to the Israeli judicial system, which will give the government the opportunity to influence the choice of judges and limit the powers of the Supreme Court to strike down laws.
Supporters of the reform say it will curb the excessive influence of the Supreme Court and restore balance between the branches of government. Critics argue that the reform will weaken the courts, jeopardize civil liberties and hurt the country’s economy.
