Negotiations are underway between Brazil and China to establish a fund to finance the development of green industries and renewable energy in both countries, Reuters reported on March 25.
A source among Luis Inácio Lula’s advisers suggested the draft would be released during the Brazilian president’s visit to Beijing next week, though government officials said some details still remained to be worked out.
“I don’t know if it will be possible to announce it because these things are complicated, but the idea is to create a bilateral fund… to invest in this area.”said Lula’s top foreign policy adviser, Celso Amorim.
Amorim clarified that he expects an agreement on renewable energy during Lula’s visit, which includes a meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping.
Brazil’s Environment Minister Marina Silva, who will be part of Lula’s delegation, said the new fund under discussion will be used to restore forests and develop a more sustainable economy, including the production of green hydrogen.
“We hope that we have a climate change agenda that will be of strategic importance for the whole world, because today it is undoubtedly one of the most serious problems of humanity”Silva said.
Brazil had already received commitments from US President Joe Biden’s administration on climate policy and forest protection when Lula visited the White House last month, he said.
In the case of China, the world’s largest emitter of greenhouse gases, Silva hopes there will be “an increasingly serious agenda for the climate, the protection of forests and biodiversity”.
However, Silva said China would not join the billion-dollar Amazon Fund set up by Norway to finance sustainable development and protect the world’s largest rainforests, which Spain, France and the United Kingdom and the United States are seeking to join. has promised to support.
