Almost 100,000 liters of hydrocarbon spilled into the Tula river and agricultural land near the Mexican city of Binola in the state of Hidalgo, La Jornada reported on March 24.
The spill was caused by gangs stealing fuel from the pipelines of Mexico’s state-owned oil and gas company Petróleos Mexicanos (PEMEX).
Local authorities described the incident as an act of “vandal”. They reported that the fuel spill on the ground has already been eliminated. The National Water Commission (Conagua) will take water samples in the coming days to establish restoration measures and calculate the degree of environmental disaster in the Tula river.
“The operational work was started by the authorities in a timely manner, and we will continue working until it is completed in order to minimize damage to flora and fauna”Mexico’s Civil Protection Authority said in a statement.
