JR Tokai plans to introduce an automated control system for the latest N700S series Shinkansen high-speed train, The Japan Times reported on March 25, citing company president Shin Kaneko.
Central Japan Railway Co., or JR Tokai, plans to implement an automated control system for its Tokaido Shinkansen high-speed trains by 2028.
The train driver will remain during the implementation of the system. He will be on board at least to start the train. The system will be implemented for the latest shinkansen of the N700S series, with which the Nozomi, Hikari and Kodama trains will operate automatically.
Emergency stops will be made by the driver, but the trains will regulate their speed and stop at stations automatically.
JR Tokai has been conducting test runs of Tokaido Shinkansen trains equipped with an automated control system since November 2021.
Tokyo Metro also said on Friday that it will start testing an automated train control system on its Marunouchi Line in fiscal 2025.
