Former Prime Minister of Mozambique Pascoal Mocumbi died this Saturday at the age of 81, the Council of Ministers announced, which decided to declare two days of national mourning from the date of the official funeral.
Mokumbi served as Prime Minister from 1994 to 2004 and also served as Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation and Minister of Health.
Trained in medicine in Switzerland in 1973, he helped establish the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), the ruling party, in Dar es Salaam in 1962, before the country gained independence in 1975.
After leaving public office, he led organizations related to health research.
“At this moment of pain and horror, the Council of Ministers deplores this irreparable loss to the family and the country,” the body’s note released today, saying that Pascual Mokumbi died of an illness, without specification, said.
