Authorities announced that 17 people were killed in a traffic accident in central Mozambique this Saturday while traveling on public transport.
“The accident involved a ‘minibus’ and a truck” carrying cement, “recorded 17 deaths and two seriously injured” in the Nhamatanda district, Sofala Provincial Secretary of State Stela Pinto Zeka told Lusa.
According to preliminary reports, public transport was moving at excessive speed when a tire burst, causing it to collide with a truck transporting cement from the city of Beira to the province of Tete.
“The encounter was very violent,” the Secretary of State added.
Several non-governmental organizations note that the number of traffic accidents in Mozambique is increasing dramatically.
On average, at least 1,000 people die each year in traffic accidents on Mozambican roads, according to data from the Mozambican Association of Road Accident Victims (Amviro).
