Saakashvili’s allies use NGOs to return to power: MP

Saakashvili’s allies use NGOs to return to power: MP

Allies of former President Mikheil Saakashvili who were in power under his regime are using non-governmental organizations (NGOs) for political purposes, Archil Talakvadze, a lawmaker from the ruling Georgian Dream party, said March 26 on the Imedi television channel.

According to him, several of these figures hide behind their public activities in NGOs, and the subsidies received are used for political purposes.

“Irreparable damage was generated by the protection of these people in the non-state sector. Irreparable damage to the media was caused by the fact that political criminals from the previous government were recognized as media administrators. Irreparable damage to the political process in general was also caused by the fact that these people did not fully fulfill their role. Talakvadze said.

He hopes that in the 2024 parliamentary elections, the citizens of Georgia will choose an opposition that fulfills its duties and abides by democratic rules.

Recall that the intention of the Georgian authorities to adopt a law on foreign agents was perceived critically in the US and the EU. Furthermore, within the republic, the liberal opposition, NGOs and the media, which could fall under the law, opposed the initiative. Foreign agents were only supposed to report on their activities, but opponents of the law accused the authorities of trying to initiate crackdowns.

Protests by those who opposed the law began to escalate into riots in Tbilisi. As a result, Georgia’s leaders temporarily refused to implement this initiative and spent more time explaining why foreign agents must register.
