US Vice President Kamala Harris began her first Africa tour to Ghana this Sunday, in which she intends to highlight the continent’s importance to US foreign interests.
“I am very excited about the future of Africa,” Harris said in a statement at Kotoka International Airport (Accra), where they were welcomed by Ghanaian Vice President Mahamudu Bavumia along with her husband Douglas Emhoff. at the start of the tour, which also passes through Tanzania and Zambia.
In a brief speech upon her arrival, the US Vice President stressed her government’s interest in increasing US investment in Africa, days after Chinese President Xi Jinping announced a series of trips by senior diplomats to various countries on the continent.
“When I look at what is happening in Africa, where the median age is 19, with everything that tells us there is room for growth and innovation, I see great potential for both the people of this continent and the rest of the world. peace,” Harris said.
The US Vice President emphasized the US interest in working with African countries to overcome the effects of the climate crisis and improve food security on the continent, empower women and youth, and digital inclusion.
Harris will remain in Ghana until Wednesday before heading to Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s most populous city and economic capital.
Harris’ trip to Africa follows US Secretary of State Anthony Blinken’s visit to Ethiopia and Niger earlier this month and US First Lady Jill Biden’s visit to Namibia and Kenya in February.
Last December, during the US-Africa Leaders’ Summit, US President Joe Biden announced that he was investing more than 15 billion euros in bilateral trade agreements with a number of countries on this continent.
