Israel’s Consul General in New York, Asaf Zamir, has decided to resign. He wrote about it on March 26 on his Twitter account.
He made this decision after the dismissal of Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant.
“It is with a heavy heart that I write to you today to inform you of my resignation as Israel’s Consul General in New York… Today’s dangerous decision to fire the Minister of Defense has convinced me that I can no longer represent this government. ”said the Consul General, who added that the new judicial reform promoted by the Israeli government headed by Benjamin Netanyahu “undermines” basis of the country’s democratic system.
Recall that Gallant previously opposed the country’s proposed judicial reform in a televised speech, suggesting that the innovation be put on hold. In his opinion, this reform provoked nationwide protests, as well as a division in society.
In his speech, Gallant said that in connection with the proposed judicial reform, reservists are refusing to serve in the military in protest, and this may affect the security of the state.
After Gallant’s televised speech, Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir turned to Netanyahu with a proposal to fire the head of the Defense Ministry.
Immediately after the dismissal of the head of the Defense Ministry, Netanyahu appealed to the citizens of Israel. “Strongly oppose denial of service”.
It should be noted that after the announcement of Gallant’s resignation, hundreds of Israelis in many cities in the state came out to protest against the government and its proposed judicial reform. According to various media reports, demonstrations are taking place in Jerusalem, Beersheba, Haifa and other major cities in Israel.
