Japan’s government asked Beijing to release the Japanese national as soon as possible, Kyodo News reported on March 27.
As part of a press conference, the Secretary General of the Government, Hirokazu Matsuno, said that Japan is interacting with people who have a connection to the detainee. He confirmed that official Beijing informed Tokyo about the arrest of this man.
The official added that Japanese consular officials were unable to meet with the detainee and also did not disclose his personal details. Earlier, the Japanese pharmaceutical company Astellas Pharma Inc. claimed that the detainee worked for it.

According to press reports, the detainee is over 50 years old. China suspects him of espionage because he allegedly violated the national security law.
China in 2014 and 2015 adjusted its national security and counterintelligence laws. Since then, at least 16 Japanese citizens have been suspected of spying.
